CANARY ISLANDS

Maintaining unpaved roads in popular tourist destinations is a problem for many countries. The province of Antigua on the Spanish island of Fuerteventura, the oldest of the seven Canary Island archipelagos off the coast of North Africa is no exception.
The vast majority of Fuerteventura’s 500 km of roads are unpaved. The Island is a tourist destination, with over 50 km of fine white sand beaches black volcanic pebbled-areas and a consistent seasonal climate.
The British Army came to the rescue of a stricken community when extreme weather in the North-West of England in November 2009 caused havoc in many communities. One of the worst effected was the town of Workington which stands either side of the River Derwent. Two stone-arch bridges, 100 years old, provided a vital link between the communities. Without the bridges, access from one side of the river to the other involved a 30 km journey through country lanes.
The force of the water cascading through the town demolished one bridge and so severely structurally damaged and under scouring the foundations of the second bridge, that the authorities had no option but to close it.

Bridge over the Rio Tua, Vila Real, Trás-os-Montes, Portugal.
Built in 1940, a reinforced concrete arched bridge which crosses the Rio Tua in the Portuguese province of Trás-os-Montes, is currently being extensively renovated. Access facilities and working platforms for the repair and maintenance work are being provided by a scaffold construction on the basis of the PERI UP Rosett Flex scaffolding system.
GERMANY

In the German city of Berlin, the 115 meter long, Spandauer Damm bridge, erected in 1963 spanned a market, a federal motorway and the tracks of long-distance and suburban trains.
The original bridge was built as a pre-stressed concrete construction. At the time, such structures were considered to be impermeable. Unfortunately, water, contaminated with road salt used in the winter to prevent icing of the surface, permeated the structure where it could corrode the steel reinforcing.
ROMANIA

The €120 million (US$177 million) project in the so-called ‘Design & Build process‘ was a special proposal by the Max Bögl group of companies that was considered the most efficient solution for the building owner compared with other drafts in the bidding procedure.
The striking architectural design of the new stadium, which, following the demolition of the Lia-Manoliu stadium built in 1953, is being built from in-situ concrete and prefabricated components with a filigree ring rope roof with membrane covering. A start was made on the demolition of the old stadium in December 2007.t medium for x-rays.
